Workers building the Catawba Dam are using an early steam shovel in this photograph. Note the name "Southern Power Company" on the side of the shovel. The Southern Power Company was formed by James Buchanan Duke in 1905, after he became a partner in the dam project with Dr. Gill Wylie. The photo probably dates to the period when the dam was being rebuilt following its destruction in the Great Flood of July 1916. This picture was found in an old family photo album with the picture of the Catawba Dam. My ancestors lived on Old Concord Rd.
