Workers building dam
Workers building the Catawba Dam are using an early steam shovel in this photograph. Note the name "Southern Power Company" on the side of the shovel. The Southern Power Company was formed by James Buchanan Duke in 1905, after he became a partner in the dam project with Dr. Gill Wylie. The photo probably dates to the period when the dam was being rebuilt following its destruction in the Great Flood of July 1916. This picture was found in an old family photo album with the picture of the Catawba Dam. My ancestors lived on Old Concord Rd.
Catawba River dam
This is the original Catawba Power Company dam that was built between 1900 and 1904. This dam was partially destroyed in the Great Flood of July 1916, so the photo dates from some time between 1904 and 1916. The photograph was found with the picture of the workers building the dam in an old family album. My ancestors lived on Old Concord Rd.
River Park
This image was taken on the banks of the Catawba River near River Park in Rock Hill. The trees color was desatureated to make the twisting roots standout against the leaves.
